How to Clean a Garburator Safely (Directions and Video)

So you want to know How to clean a Garburator safely. Cleaning your garbage disposal or garburator can be dangerous. However it is just one of those things that we simply can’t avoid. The longer you postpone the cleaning of your garbage disposal, the dirtier it gets and the chances of clogging, breakdown and malfunctioning increase exponentially. Furthermore if you don’t clean it on a regular basis it can lead to foul odors. These odors are primarily due to the build-up of a sticky slime.  These are the undersides of the rubber baffle at the drain opening and the smooth, sloped area at the top of the grinding chamber. In order to avoid all this, it is generally recommended that you clean it on a regular basis, a weekly cleaning would be ideal.

How to Clean a Garburator with a Soapy Kitchen Sponge

You will need the following items…

  • Citrus peels (optional)
  • Ice (optional)
  • Dish soap
  • Baking soda and vinegar (optional)
  • Kitchen sponge with an abrasive side
  • Rock salt (optional)
  • Bleach (optional)

Step 1 – Turn off the Power

Turn off the power to prevent the disposal from being turned accidentally on while you are cleaning, even though your hand shouldn’t be near the grinding “teeth” at the bottom of the chamber. Unplug the disposal from the outlet under the sink, or turn off the disposal’s breaker in your home’s service panel also known as the breaker box.

Step 2 – Clean the Baffle

Apply dish soap to an abrasive sponge and scrub under the baffle—thoroughly—to get all into all of the folds and creases.

Step 3 – Clean the Grinding Chamber

Swipe around the top of the grinding chamber. Again, rinse the sponge frequently. Repeat until the sponge pulls up no more gunk and the disposal surfaces feel clean.

If you do nothing other than clean these two key areas, you’ll be pretty much good to go. But if you want to take one more step and give an extra layer of perfection to the disposal and drain pipe while you’re at it, then try the following cleaning tricks.

How to Clean a Garburator with Baking Soda and Vinegar

Homemade disposal and drain cleaner made with baking soda and vinegar can help to clean the chamber of the garbage disposal as well as the top of the drain pipe.

Step 1 – Add the Baking Soda and Vinegar

Pour half a cup of baking soda into the garbage disposal, then slowly and carefully pour 1/2 cup of vinegar into the disposal.

Step 2 – Cover the Drain

Place the sink stopper over the drain opening. The mixture of baking soda and vinegar will fizz up like a kids’ science class volcano. The sink stopper traps the fizzing baking soda within the disposal.

Step 3 – Flush the Disposal

Hold on a few seconds, then remove the stopper and flush the disposal with hot water while running the garbage disposal. If the sink has two basins, the cleaner will work best if both sides are cleaned at the same time. Use the same amounts of baking soda and vinegar in the other sink drain.

Step 4 – Repeat (If Needed)
