Unclog a Toilet or Call for Drain Cleaning Services?

For many people, the most sensitive room in the house is the toilet. This is because everyone in the household has to use the toilet at one point or another. A clogged toilet is one of those situations that can really stress you out especially if you do not know the cause of the clog. Furthermore, if you have kids in the house or visitors coming over, dealing with a clogged toilet will be the cause of a lot of distress and the last thing you want to do.

There are several reasons why a toilet may be clogged. These may range from poor plumbing to buildup to obstructions. Despite the reason, it’s definitely a situation you will want to deal with immediately and you still need to figure out the cause. For the more hands-on type of people, the first instinct will be to take steps to easily relieve the clog.

For others, they will just want to contact a drain cleaning services company. Well, before you rally the cavalry to work on your clogged toilet, there are steps you can take to remedy the situation, especially if it is urgent. There’s no reason to wait for a drain cleaning service provider to come to your home when it may be an issue you can solve on your own.

Steps to consider before calling for Drain Cleaning Services

Don’t flush the toilet more than once

If you flush your toilet the first time and it doesn’t completely flush after the first try, do not try to do it again. Many people always think that the second time will be the charm and that’s how they end us flooding their toilet floor. This is a situation you would rather avoid.

A clogged toilet many times will not be solved by flushing. This will just cause the toilet to overflow and pump more water into the toilet bowl unnecessarily. What you should do is prevent more water from flowing into the bowl by taking the lid off your tank and closing the flapper. The flapper is a small, circular piece made of rubber that stops water from flowing into and out of the toilet. This will prevent any unknowing person from flushing the toilet after you as well.

Prepare your environment

Assuming that you have already prevented the toilet from overflowing, it is still a good idea to place a newspaper or paper towels on the floor just in case. Keep a pair of rubber gloves close and clear the toilet of any unnecessary stuff. You should also turn on your ventilation system to keep the air fresh and prevent any odors from escaping to the rest of the house.

If there’s an obstruction, avoid plunging

If you have kids, you already know that the toilet is considered a fascinating dumping site to them. All sorts of things, including their toys, can get clogged in there. If you can see the obstruction inside the pipe, simply put on your gloves and reach for it. If you cannot quite see the obstruction but have an idea of what it may be, you may gently use the plunger. However, it’s always best to avoid plunging and try something else altogether in case the obstruction moves even further down.

Use a plunger to unclog a toilet

If the obstruction is not a solid, you can go ahead and use a plunger. Make sure that you are using a good quality plunger which is either a ball-shaped or a plunger with a fold-out rubber flange on its bottom end which forms a suction seal. If your plunger does not form a seal, it is not working properly. If the plunger is new, you may find that the rubber is too stiff to be used. The easiest remedy for this is to run some hot water on that end of the plunger to soften the rubber and within a few minutes, you are good to go. Make sure that the rubbery end is tightly fixed to the handle of the plunger to avoid it getting stuck down there as well.

Flush with the plunger in the toilet

Your plunger needs to completely cover the hole of your toilet for you to do this. It needs to guarantee solid suction when submerged for this method to work. Slowly pump the plunger as you flush water into the bowl. This may go on for even 20 minutes but you just have to be patient.

If none of the above methods work, then it just may be time to call a professional drain cleaning services company to deal with your clogged toilet.

When to call a professional plumber

  • You’ve tried all you can and the toilet is still clogged – If any of the above methods do not work, it is time to get in touch with a professional drain cleaning services company.
  • You are worried about permanent damage – Sometimes, you may get carried away with trying to fix your own clogged toilet that in the end, you cause more harm than good. Never try to force your toilet to unclog because you may damage your plumbing system. Notice that in the steps above, even when using a plunger, it states that it should be done gently.
  • You may be worried that the issue goes way beyond your toilet – The clog in your toilet may simply be a symptom of a much bigger problem. This could have to do with your sewer line or something else. If this is the case, you would rather seek professional help.
  • The problem keeps recurring – If you realize that you are having to unclog your toilet too often, there may be another problem and all you are doing is putting a temporary patch on it.

Before you try to fix your toilet problems yourself, think about it beforehand. Employing the wrong tactics may end up costing you more in the long run than if you had contacted a professional drain cleaning services company.
